Day 2105: Greetings from Southern California!

Hello! After my exams last week, I have taken a bit of a breather to see some friends (my best friend in Indiana to be exact) and take studying a little more slowly in preparation of Thanksgiving (can you believe it's here already?).

Anyhoo, I am currently in my sister's bedroom in her soon-to-be-old-house doing things like this:

I watch these lectures in lieu of my actual pathology lectures because these are wonderful and I have found myself pulling a McKayla Maroney (unimpressed) with how my course has been taught.

Anyhoo, I'll post fun pictures (which I'm sure will continue my mother's (and probably father's) delusions that all I do is have fun and not study) in the near future!

Days 1938-1946: The Bros come to Cali!

The first picture of the trip!

These boys sure know how to ham it up.

At Paradise Pier in California Adventure

Waiting in line for the new ride in Cars Land!

Me and my favorite Disney character (and other people)

(in the Pirates ride!)

At the end of our dinner at Blue Bayou.

Aww, so cute.

Just like the movie!

These kids love their Disney pins.

At Crystal Cove State Park in Laguna Beach.

More ham.

This is the saddest picture.
Danny's brother has never seen the Hollywood sign and the
black space between the lights is where it should be lit up.

The Palace of Fine Arts! Check one off the to-do list!

My favorite picture of all the trips I've taken this summer.

At Pier 39. There are sea lions back there.

Day 1164: A day away from a new beginning.

It's a bit late.

I have just finished packing up a majority of my things. Later today, I plan on attending yoga, seeing a pal at her place and probably falling asleep by the pool, packing up the car, meeting my mom at her office for a company potluck, returning keys and books to their respective places, last minute packing, going out for dollar-half-pint night for a wee moment and then bed!

Crap. Somewhere in there, I need to book my hotels for the long drive to the beautiful state of Wisconsin.

Aside from this boring little housekeeping post, I should probably delve into my inner psyche and let you all know how I'm doing. I'm doing swell enough. My friend Bruce came to California and it was a ton of fun, gallavanting all over California and showing him the sights. (Pictures to follow in another post) I have hung out with a fair number of actual people I like (such a rarity for me) before my departure. Honest to blog, I'm just ready to go and start. I've known for ten months that this was coming and now that it's finally here, it feels just like that, finally. It's going to be gosh-awful, the stress, the newness of school, the stress, meeting new people, the stress, but it's going to awful in the best way humanly possible :)

See you in the midwest!

Day 1153: Prelude to insanity (the good kind)

In seven hours, I will be on my way to Los Angeles to see my friend Bruce, show him around southern California, see my lovely sister, go to Disneyland (for three craze-tastic days), go to San Diego, and other insanely busy, but fun, things.

Here we go.

Day 897: Undergraduate musings

Having had the great pleasure of participating in four medical school interviews, it was my last one in Milwaukee that led me to this post.

For those of you that know (and those of you that don't), I went to college in New York.

I'm from California.

Upon telling people this, they all seem very impressed. Well, maybe not impressed, but they do tend to say, "wow you've been all over." I didn't realize that it was odd to go to university outside of your state. All of my friends from college did the same thing. One is from Wisconsin, the other is from North Carolina by way of Indiana, and the others are from nearby Pennsylvania. Of course, there's my one friend from New York state (you know who you are), and I actually found it odd that she stayed in New York. I suppose it's what you're used to.

Anyway, I feel very lucky to have had the opportunity to study in New York. It provided me opportunities abound that I certainly would not have had if I went to a state school (which my mother still laments).

It also, I find, made me much more willing to up-and-move to wherever. I kid you not, every single student and/or applicant I spoke to in Milwaukee told me they ended up attending this school (or applying/interviewing at this school) for the sheer fact that they wanted to get away from home and/or college. It would have been too much of the same and they all wanted to get away.

I realized, probably by the fourth person that told me this, that I'm not getting away from anything. Home is always going to be California. If I seem especially willing to leave it, it doesn't mean I don't love it. I adore California. But I'll always come back. To see family and friends and whatnot. So, I don't feel a pressing need to stay because I know I'll always return. I think I just never realized how different it was of me to be so willing to move. Especially when I've never considered myself to be terribly nomadic or anything of the sort.

You really learn (or finally glean) something new (about yourself, in this case) everyday.

Day 395: Home sweet home

I know, I know. It's been a while.

I'm finally home in California and I have the boxes in my house and the mileage on my car to prove it! My dear friend Tori and I drove through 8 states total to get from North Kakalaky to Cali-Cali and it was quite a trip. Here's a brief rundown of my trip -- check back later for pictures.
  • North Carolina: This involved a really beautiful drive through the Appalachian mountains.

  • Tennessee: Not much there. Long as heck state.

  • Arkansas: My friend Joy warned us it wouldn't be that pretty but the fact that we were visiting her made it all the more worthwhile. Joy's a blast and her whole family (hers and her husband's) are loads of fun. Oh, and Tori and I almost died in a hurricane. That was fun.

  • Oklahoma: Not a fun state. We didn't get any pictures of Oklahoma-related signs. Boo.

  • Texas: Ugly. Desolate. Boring. Moving on. (Granted, we drove on I-40 through northern Texas. Maybe the southern part is better. ...we weren't holding our breath.)

  • New Mexico: Much more lively, better scenery.

  • Arizona: Since it was along the way (sort of), we stopped off at the Grand Canyon. I hadn't been for ages. It was honestly breathtaking.

  • California: Tori was amazed at LA traffic. LA wasn't as terrible and soul-sucking as I remember. We stayed a day and we drove home Wednesday. Tori and I went to a winery in Napa yesterday and we had a complete blast.
Currently, Tori and my sister are asleep on the couch and I'm here, blogging. I need to upload pictures, clean my room, get skinny, and prep for more friends heading out west :)

I love being home. I can feel sanity and general contentedness seeping back into my soul.

Day 345: I thought I blogged but...

...I guess not. I'm taking a quick break from studying to check my e-mail and finish up some online homework.

Anyhoo, I have my last Organic exam (before the final) tomorrow and I'm going to ace it. I'm studying my butt off and I'm going to rock it out.

The budget cuts across California have affected my future schooling. What this means is that I intended to continue my postbacc work in Cali (taking advanced science courses) but I can't because no schools are accepting students. And, because I dropped the ball, I am applying too late for the fall quarter. I don't know what to do.

(Copyright: ArvinComics)

I only need to take one more requirement (General Biology II) but I really wanted to take Biochemistry. Also, if I'm not taking classes, med schools will think I was being a lazy bum during the glide year/application year. It's just a lot of crappy economics happening at the moment. I've got people I need to call at SFSU, SJSU, etc today to get some 411.

Aside from that, school's about over (Cinco de Mayo is the last day!). Then I have finals. Goody.

Day 210: And it's all over (for now)!

Yes! I win!

And I'm done suckers. Muahaha.

I'm not going to lie. That final was hard. It wasn't necessarily anything I couldn't handle but it was, in typical Dr. Red (that's my Organic professor's "name") fashion, something I couldn't expect. I also did not study as much as I did for this final as I have for our previous exams but I've got to say, all in all, it was a good freaking final. It really tested one's breadth of Organic knowledge and I don't know...I'm a huge nerd who loves this stuff so I thought even though it was tough, it was good-tough. Either way, it's over and I'll get my grade for this course by the end the of the week (most likely).

The best freaking news ever is that I am going HOME. To California. Tomorrow.

Life does not get better than that.
